Framework & Policies

The Australian Veterinary Nurse and Technician (AVNAT) Registration Scheme has been established and launched by the Veterinary Nurses Council of Australia Inc. (VNCA) following extensive research, stakeholder engagement, benchmarking and legal review.

The AVNAT Framework together with related Policies and Procedures outline the structure of the Scheme, including the initial criteria for individuals seeking to be registered or listed under the Scheme, as well as expectations for ongoing recognition under the Scheme. In particular, it seeks to ensure that all individuals registered or listed are of a suitable standing, have acquired an appropriate level of professional competence and demonstrate a commitment to ongoing learning enabling them to provide safe and effective veterinary nursing and related services. Individuals demonstrate their suitable standing by adhering to the Code of Professional Conduct and Ethical Practice, as well as through a range of declarations and demonstration of attainment of standards. Professional competence is achieved through attaining a recognised qualification(s) including clinical practice, and ongoing learning is demonstrated through participation in continuing professional development (CPD) activities.
