On behalf of the VNCA we warmly invite you to apply for recognition under the Australian Veterinary Nurse and Technician (AVNAT) Registration Scheme.  The Scheme has been developed for professionals working in clinical, management or academic areas across the veterinary industry.

While not yet mandatory, the VNCA seeks strong support from the profession which, in turn, will provide us with a mandate to advocate on behalf of the profession, the veterinary sector and the community for compulsory registration for all individuals working as veterinary nurses or veterinary technicians.

Are you ready to apply?

If you are a qualified veterinary nurse or veterinary technician, you can apply to become a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) and/or a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) -

  • STEP 1: Provide evidence that you have completed a recognised VN or VT qualification. An individual pathway via submitting your qualification for recognition is available. Click here to see the list of recognised qualifications.
    Note:  All applicants must submit a copy of their qualification, even if you are already a VNCA Full member.
     
  • STEP 2: Provide evidence that you have completed 20 points of eligible CPD in the 12 months prior to your application. If you apply by 30 June 2021 you can provide a letter of good standing from your employer instead.

  • STEP 3: Provide evidence of recent practice – click to download the template (MS Word).
    Note: This process is only for initial application, for annual renewal it is a self-assessment tick box only. 

    Note: If you completed your qualification in the six months prior to applying or do not meet this criteria, you may be offered provisional registration.
     
  • STEP 4: Provide a One-year Career Plan – you will need to provide us with a brief (up to 200 words) plan for the coming year which will guide the CPD you undertake – click to download the template (MS Word).
    Note: Applicants are strongly encouraged to use their participation in the AVNAT Registration Scheme to define their career goals.

     
  • STEP 5: Indicate you will comply with the AVNAT Code of Professional Conduct and Ethical Practice - this will be a tick box on the application.

  • STEP 6: Indicate you will comply with the AVNAT Mandatory Declarations Policy - this will be a tick box on the application.

  • STEP 7: Pay the prescribed fee - click here to view the fee schedule.  
    Note:  Applicants who are current VNCA members will have their membership cycle adjusted to the AVNAT Registration Scheme cycle (1 July to 30 June), noting that the initial cycle is 1 April 2019 to 30 June 2020. We recommend you select Cheque/EFT as the payment method and await advice from the VNCA National Office regarding payment owing for your initial registration cycle.
     

If you are studying to become a veterinary nurse or veterinary technician, you can apply to be listed as a Student Veterinary Nurse (SVN) and/or a Student Veterinary Technician (SVT) -

  • STEP 3: Indicate you will comply with the AVNAT Code of Professional Conduct and Ethical Practice - this will be a tick box on the application.

What happens after you submit your application?

Please note that processing of applications cannot commence until all information and payment is received.

Please allow up to 10 working days for your application to be processed. We anticipate that most applications will be approved within this timeframe.  Once approved, an email will be issued to notify you of the outcome.  If your application needs to be referred to the AVNAT Regulatory Council, you will be advised by email and provided with an approximate timeline.

Successful applicants:

  • Will receive initial notification via email, following which you are authorised to use the relevant postnominals - RVN, RVT, SVN, SVT
  • Will be posted an AVNAT Welcome Pack comprising formal letter of acceptance, a letter you can give to your employer or work placement for their records, AVNAT Framework and Policies, along with AVNAT badge and AVNAT certificate
  • Are responsible for ensuring their listing on the AVNAT Online Register is correct and up-to-date at all times.

We encourage you to be proud of your achievement – ensure you tell your employer and colleagues, keep your online listing up-to-date, wear your badge, use your postnominals and display your certificate prominently.

If your application is unsuccessful, be assured you will be provided with guidance to assist you to re-apply should you meet the criteria.
